Touring on the GT or RT?!

Image
Spring 2015 NM/AZ Tour - My first one on the RTW In this post, I want to give my perspective on the differences between executing a planned motorcycle trip on the K1600GT vs. the R1200RTW. I preordered the K16 in early 2011, sight unseen, based solely on the concept renderings and “paper specifications” published by BMW. At the time, they were announcing their new revolutionary inline-six cylinder engine, and I was riding the K1200GT. Mary's Lake, near Estes Park Colorado. Summer 2015 Tour (SD, WY, MT, UT, CO). Prior to the K12, I was riding a (I believe) 2007 R1200GS, with the oilhead engine, and my wife was riding a 2004 R1150RT with a Hannigan sidecar. I didn’t like either of the boxer engines – they felt somewhat anemic and had a couple of RPM bands with annoying vibrations. The K16 on Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. Spring 2014 Tour. Touring on the GS was fun, but I soon realized that I never used the “Gelände” portion of the ‘GS’ moniker. In

First 2016 Season Ride...

Image
Wow. What a day for a first ride of the season! Temps got as high as 72F (22C!!!), and while there were a bunch of cruisers 'cruising along,' they weren't (yet) in herds of 20+, so I was able to dispatch them in short order  smile emoticon ... Some side roads are still a bit cruddy, with lots of sand etc. in the corners, but overall roads were better than I anticipated! All in all, one of the better 'first rides' as a season opener. The bike is now back in the main garage, and will stay there - so all I need is some good weather to tango  wink emoticon One PITA - the BMW Comm System somehow got unpaired from the bike - and re-pairing (still) is a royal pain in the keister; actually had to dig up the book to figure out the right sequence. Now we're back in business.

Start of the 2016 riding season! 🏍

My Tail Bag

Image
After posting my photos on Instagram, Facebook, G+, and here, I have been getting the same question a lot: "What is that tail bag you're using?" Well, it's called the "Storage Pod" from Z-Technik. I bought mine locally at  BMW Motorcycles of Omaha , but I have also found it online. the tail bag usually holds 1-2 bottles of water for the road, my tool set, a small tripod, and, when touring with the group, my Kenwood radio. The tank bag is the standard (new) BMW RTW bag; besides some power bars, my wallet, etc, I usually also keep my Sony A7Rii in it for quick access. So, for those interested in a smaller tail bag, check it out e.g. on the National Cycle  web site ... Keep in mind that this 'pod' does not lock, so I don't keep anything I'd like to keep in it; or if I do, I make sure to take the stuff I'd like to keep out in the evening. Hope this helps! -Alain

Backroads or Interstate?

I get this question a lot relating to the motorcycle trips I plan… Like for many of us, riding Interstates is expedient, but also often quite boring. For my personal tours, I usually will ride Interstates to get to where I want to have fun, or see the sights, on the motorcycle. As a general rule, I calculate my overall average speed riding Intestates as 65mph (note that this includes stops, like refueling, re-hydration and relief, quick snacks, etc. This way, in a 12-hour riding day, I can typically cover between 750 and 800 miles. On two lane roads on the other hand, I usually get an overall average between 45mph and 50mph (depending on the amount of towns I have to go through, or local traffic I encounter, e.g.), thus covering anywhere from 540 to 600 miles in that same 12-hour period. While 200 miles may not seem like much, it will add up quickly, especially when doing a cross-country trip – e.g. from Western Iowa to California, which is typically close to 1550 miles one way: Us

New Garmin Zumos With Adventurous Routing Functions

Image
Press Release : Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), today announced the new zūmo 395LM and zūmo 595LM motorcycle navigators. The rugged, weatherproof1 models offer Garmin Adventurous RoutingTM so riders can select the level of twists and hills on every journey. The zūmo 395/595LM presents innovative features specifically designed for motorcyclists with the introduction of rider alerts, helpful smart features, new streaming music options and much more. “What’s exciting about the new zūmo models is that they are designed to find those adventurous winding roads that riders typically crave,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “The ability to stream Spotify music will also enhance the thrill of every ride.” Garmin Adventurous RoutingTM options elevate the ride by finding routes with curves and hills, while limiting major highways that offer unchanging and often wearisome roads. In order to enhance the adventure, both zūmo models allow

About me...

Welcome to “Motorcycle Trip Planning.” This Web site is dedicated to helping motorcyclists plan safe, fun, and exciting multi-day trips. Whether you are a veteran or a “newby,” whether you ride a Harley-Davidson, a BMW, a Ducati, or any other brand of motorcycle, we will help you plan better trips – trips that you will look back at with great memories for years to come… Who are “ we ” you may ask? Primarily, Alain Zarinelli. I have been riding motorcycles since I was 16 – for over 35 years now. I have planned annual motorcycle trips (or ‘tours’) both in Europe and in the United States ever since I got my motorcycle license. I toured the Swiss, Austrian, German, French, and Italian Alps. I toured the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, the deserts and high plains in Arizona, Utah, and New Mexico, and the Sierras in California and Oregon, among other locales. I currently ride a 2015 BMW R1200RT Liquid Cooled, and have owned various other BMWs (K1600GT,

On Rain Suits...

A while ago, I read an article in Rider Magazine (02 November 2015), entitled “ Rainsuits 101: Staying Dry At Speed “. I posted a link to the article on my Facebook group of ‘Motorcycle Trip Planning’ ; a subscriber there had the following comment on the article: “ The problem with rain gear is if it starts raining and you haven’t got it on you get wet. If you have it on and it’s not raining you look like a dork. If it isn’t raining and you don’t want to look like a dork you have to store it somewhere and space is always at a premium on a trip. None of this seems very practical. The Aerostitch Roadcrafter suit seems the best all-around choice. I recently did a lap around Lake Superior on the Canadian side from St. Louis. It rained six out of seven days. Temps ranged from 40s to high 80s. That thing does the trick without needing to store it or stop and change into something else. (The dork problem persist in some opinions.) “ I have reviewed my current (and previous) gear else

Three-Wheeler Threeway

Image
Third Party Content! Via Motorcycle.com : Three-Wheeler Threeway Five years ago this month MO reported that Bombardier Recreational Products had filed a patent as far back as 2009 for a control system that’d allow the Can-Am Spyder to lean . Later that same year it came to light that Harley-Davidson had been developing a similar tilting three-wheeler ( the Penster ) for years before scrapping the project and moving in a more traditional-trike direction with the Tri-Glide and recently introduced Freewheeler . Well, guess what? The leaning reverse trike charge isn’t being led or financed by BRP or H-D and their incredibly deep pockets. At the vanguard of the full-size tilting trike revolution is a lone engineer in a garage somewhere in Snohomish, WA. Read more...

There's No Right Or Wrong Way To Be A Motorcyclist

Third Party Content! Via  Lanesplitter :  There's No Right Or Wrong Way To Be A Motorcyclist : Motorcycles are one of the best things to ever happen to me. They’ve brought more fun, passion, people, interest, experiences, and growth into my life than a lot of things, and I bet many of you would say the same. But they’re worth different amounts to different people—and it’s time to stop letting that divide us.  Read more...

Sea to Shining Sea: Coast-to-Coast for the Heck of it

Image
Third Party Content! Via  Rider Magazine :  Sea to Shining Sea: Coast-to-Coast for the Heck of it Following the small roads, like this one leading to Cottonwood Pass in Colorado’s Eagle County, is more fun than the Interstate.  I love these long hauls, love looking at the beauty, and occasional ugliness, of this great nation, love stopping at all the historical markers along the way, thinking about how this country came together over the past 240 years. Anybody who thinks that riding from coast to coast would be boring is lacking in imagination.   Read more ...

Riding The Edge Of Ontario

Third Party Content! Via  Motorcycle.com :  Riding The Edge Of Ontario : These days, every tourism board and region under the sun seems to have a route designed for motorcycle riders. That’s a good thing – but do all of them really go the extra mile for the rider? Or are they just taking a shortcut to get motorcyclists to plop down their hard-earned cash at motels, restaurants and gas stations?   Read more...
